We’re barely halfway through the fasting month of Ramadan, but shopping malls in and around the Klang Valley have already set up their breathtaking decorations to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, with each one trying to outdo the others in terms of size, complexity, and list of activities. Add to that the Mega Sale that lasts up to two months, from now until end of August, and you’ll be wishing you’d saved a little extra to indulge in some retail therapy this Hari Raya. 1 Utama Shopping Centre is pulling out all the stops this year for their Meriahnya Syawal” festive Raya decorations at Lower Ground (LG) Floor Oval. The space has been transformed into a mini kampung complete with a traditional Malay house, wakaf (gazebo), benches, retro bicycles, and Vespa scooters. Visitors can immerse themselves in the kampung atmosphere while strolling the grassy pathways (with real dirt and grass!) and taking pictures with traditional decorations, or sit down at the picnic benches to enjoy delicious food including lemang with rendang atuk, and coconut ice-cream. Highlights and activities to look forward to include celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, awesome shopping promotions, entertaining Aidilfitri performances, a Weekend Bazaar, and fashion shows.

Mid Valley Megamall

With its decorations centred around the theme of a nostalgic and traditional balik kampung trip this Raya, Mid Valley has brought the sights and sounds of a kampung right into the heart of the mall at its Ground Floor Centre Court area. Shoppers will be fascinated by the retro-vintage decorations of a street from the 1960’s, which include old-school stalls selling various trinkets, vintage cars and traditional décor. It will definitely invoke the feeling of nostalgia for the good old days when everyone balik kampung to celebrate Hari Raya with their friends and families. Of course, the mall also has an array of exciting happenings and activities throughout the festive season.

Avenue K

Avenue K, one of KL’s fastest-growing malls located right next door to Suria KLCC, is also gearing up for a Retro Raya theme, complete with decorations inspired by a 1960’s Malaya shophouse street. Shoppers can browse booths selling Raya snacks and handmade accessories at the Raya Bazaar, enjoy weekend Retro Lagenda performances, and participate in lucky draws with purchases within the mall. There’s also a special Nostalgia Sinema Ramadhan Buffet, where diners can enjoy a buka puasa buffet spread while watching classic Malay movies screening.

Sunway Pyramid

This Raya, Sunway Pyramid wants to let the inspiration of the traditional art of anyaman (weaving) infuse the mall with its delicate yet simplistic art form, creating a warm ambiance reminiscent of family and harmony for the upcoming Aidilfitri season. The theme of “Anyaman Raya” (Weaving a Joyous Raya) is perfectly complemented with the balik kampung feel its quaint little kampung set-up at the mall’s concourse area, which has a small kampung house, towering palm trees, and booths offering sumptious Raya delicacies. Shoppers can take part in activities like the Raya Weaving Workshop, or simply learn to fold a ketupat for a good cause.

IOI City Mall celebrates the essence of traditional Malay culture and the values of unity, harmony and family this year, with a lineup of cultural shows, traditional performances, workshops and fun activities for the whole family throughout the festive period. A large kampung house with a wide verandah and surrounded by lush greenery is the centrepiece of the Raya decorations at its Centre Court; shoppers can take part in activities held on the verandah and shop for Raya food and fashion at the surrounding booths.
