Malaysia to host first overseas Japanese varsity branch campus
Malaysia will be the first country to have a Japanese university branch on its soil, with plans to build the campus in either Selangor or Kedah. Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said a study on the matter had been carried out extensively for a year, and the University of Tsukuba had come out with the “most serious offer” which would likely materialise by next year. Malaysia is already home to branch campuses from other countries, including Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and China. He said Japan had never intended to open branch campuses overseas, likely due to their fiscal policies. Dr Mahathir also expressed hope that the academic staff would be Japanese and the programme options would include twinning courses, where students would be sent to study in Japan for two years as part of their courses.
