The fat man in a red suit just left, and we’re welcoming another one decked out in red and gold barely a month later. You must be thinking, what are you talking about? Chinese New Year, of course! 😛
After being dazzled by last month’s Christmas decorations, we’re back with a compilation of the awesome CNY décor found in our Malaysian malls, all the way from North to South. Since it’s the year of the Rooster, some of the malls are getting a bit ‘chicky’ (heh) with their decorations, while others take a more elegantly traditional route for their displays this Chinese New Year. Take a look at our round-up below, and share with us which are your favourites! 😉

Pavilion KL

With diligence, good values and blessings, one will rise to opulence – like the Rooster transforming into a Majestic Phoenix, rising high into the sky, full of pride and beauty. As you know by now, Pavilion KL is the epitome of ‘go big or go home’, and their CNY decoration this year is no exception. Catch Malaysia’s Largest Phoenix Replica at the Centre Court, and enjoy festive treats and performances throughout the festive period. Psst… A little birdie told us that you should stroke the crown of the Golden Rainbow Rooster for some extra luck and ong!
Suria KLCC
19 Jan – 5 Feb 2017
Suria KLCC wants you to come home and celebrate a season full of love and warmth this Chinese New Year, with decorations reminiscent of a cozy Peranakan-style reunion dinner. As one of the malls most frequented by overseas tourists, KLCC‘s ‘homecoming’ décor a good way to welcome visitors and show how Malaysians celebrate Chinese New Year in a traditional setting. Visitors can also do their part to spread warmth and lunar happiness to underprivileged children by donating RM10 and hang a personal greeting card on the tree at Park Mall entrance.
Sunway Pyramid
30 Dec 2016 – 29 Jan 2017
‘Mai Zao Gai’ (米走鸡) means ‘do not let great bargains or opportunities run away’. You definitely won’t miss the giant chicken figurine perched atop the ‘buildings’! Inspired by the classic multi-level retail shops as well as Chinese signages, Sunway Pyramid’s Orange Concourse is decorated up to 4-storeys high with structures of shops and a theatre that resembles the yesteryears. Colourful rooster sculptures, lanterns, and red painted walls will create memorable backdrops for photo opportunities. Cock-a-doodle-doo, may fortune smile on you! 😛

Decked out in the auspicious colours of red and gold with festive Oriental decorations, the mall once again wows visitors with its elaborate display. The magnificent stage at Oval Concourse is modelled after the historical Main Auditorium of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China. Shining bright lanterns and beautiful lighted pillars make up of the decorations here this year, giving the mall a festive and lively atmosphere. Live long and prosper, we say! (Wait, that’s from Star Trek……)

As visitors enter, a truly imperial court experience awaits, embellished by brilliant gold and deep red hues, as well as pillars showcasing beautiful carvings of Chinese dragons and patterns. Taking place against this striking backdrop is the highlight of the Curve’s festive campaign, a specially-choreographed live performance entitled The Empress’s Court Dance Musical. It’s a refreshing change from the usual CNY performances, so don’t miss out on this exciting musical event!
Paradigm Mall

Paradigm Mall takes a different twist on the usual CNY theme, with its quirky-cute doodles featuring HapiChick from popular local artist Pocotee & Friends. There are plenty of adorable photo-ops with the various ‘chicky’ characters here, which adults and kids will love. There are also ‘Meet & Greet’ sessions with Pocotee herself, where you can get autographs and personalised caricatures! The mall has also lined up tons of fun-filled events for families to enjoy together, so head on over to enjoy a cheekily fun CNY. 😀

Explore the City of Prosperity at Berjaya Times Square and be blessed with good health and wealth in 2017! Depicting scenes abuzz with activities typical of ancient China, the city welcomes you to bask in the glory of its golden years and be amazed at ornate décor emulating forgotten centuries. The Starling
12 Jan – 12 Feb 2017
One of the newest additions to Klang Valley’s mall scene, this neighbourhood mall in the heart of Damansara Uptown is sure to attract lots of curious visitors. While the mall isn’t fully tenanted yet, there are enough shops to allow for a couple hours of CNY shopping, be it clothes or groceries, and quite a few F&B outlets for you to grab a bite between hauls. (And if you love hipster cafes, just head outside to the Damansara Uptown shops for more coffee and desserts than you can shake a stick at.) We love the big, airy spaces inside the mall but it can be a little cold, so bring a cardigan!
Queensbay Mall, Penang
6 Jan – 12 Feb 2017
We’re kinda jealous of those in Penang, to be honest. Queensbay Mall has managed to convert its Christmas winter wonderland into a frosty village gearing up for the festive season. The tiny township is complete with a bustling Chinese New Year bazaar offering cookies, delicacies, gift hampers and decorative items. The sugar-coated haws, dragon’s beard candy and dumpling stalls along the boulevard is the mall’s wishes for its shoppers – a sweet and beautiful life filled with abundance of wealth in the year of 2017.
Johor Bahru City Square
31 Dec 2016 – 30 Jan 2017
Celebrate abundance and prosperity this Chinese New Year at Johor Bahru City Square, a firm favourite shopping destination for JB locals and Singaporeans. Although fairly simple to some others featured in our list here, the décor here sets the stage for plenty of fun and exciting activities and performances, including Kids Handcraft Workshop, Family Orchestra Performance, Caligraphy Demonstration, Leong Sir Feng Shui Talk and Lion Dance.
Aman Central Mall, Alor Setar
6 Jan – 5 Feb 2017
Aman Central invites you to usher in Chinese New Year with opulent vibes and Oriental charm, Grand Imperial Shanghai. Befitting its status as the largest mall in northern Malaysia, rich hues of gold and red fill the Central Atrium, alongside blooming peonies and a circular stage that resembles a Chinese reunion dinner table. It is a scene representing harmony, joy and love. The CNY décor in this Alor Setar mall can definitely rival many of Klang Valley’s malls!
