DO NOT stay quiet when somebody knocks on the door

Barking dogs
Having a (guard) dog at home is always a good idea, as the risk of being attacked will deter most intruders or burglars.

Park your car in the driveway
A car in the driveway usually indicates that someone is at home, thus reducing the risk of a break-in.
Keep curtains open
While most people understandably keep their curtains closed to protect their privacy while at home, it is suggested that having the curtains open is safer, because whatever activity is going on indoors is visible from the outside.
